The emergency tensioning retractor serves to take up the slack in the seat belt in the event of an accident (frontal or rear end collision) and prevents the
seat belt's film reel effect. The close fitting seat belt means that vehicle occupants are exposed to the deceleration forces acting on the body at an earlier
stage.

In a further crash, the normal protective function of the belt is retained. The task of the electromechanical locking system is to block the inertia reel shaft
without tensioning and force limiting and to absorb the entire load.
