Camshaft: Testing and Inspection
Checking Basic Setting of Camshafts

PRECEDING WORK

Cylinder head covers removed.   See: Cylinder Head Assembly/Valve Cover/Service and Repair
Viscodrive fan removed.

OVERVIEW

Checking
Piston of cylinder 1:

Rotate to ignition TDC with wrench socket 001 589 65 09 00 (steps 1 and 2).

The 4 mm diameter holes in the camshaft flanges (arrows):

Are touching the top edge of the cylinder heads (step 2).

Pins (1):

Insert into the holes (arrows) (step 3). Camshaft adjuster against retarded stop.

PROCEDURE

Checking

Rotate piston of cylinder 1 to ignition TDC position.
To do this, rotate crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine with wrench 001 589 65 09 00 until the TDC marking (arrow) on the vibration
damper (8) is aligned with the TDC pointer (7) on the timing case cover.
