Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The contact spiral establishes electrical continuity between the jacket tube and steering wheel
It replaces the previously fitted horn and airbag wiper contacts in the jacket tube and steering wheel
DESIGN
The contact spiral comprises:
Lower section of the housing (32g)
Upper section of the housing (32f)
4-wire ribbon cable (32e), coiled up in a spiral approximately 3.5 m in length
Fixing screws (32h)
FUNCTION
The housing sections (32f and 32g) can rotate relative to each other
The lower section of the housing (32g) is screwed to the steering column tube with fixing screws (32h), these fixing screws being used as an
anti-twist device when the contact spiral is removed
The upper section of the housing (32f) is also turned by the steering wheel
The ribbon cable (32e) is uncoiled on right lock and coiled up on lee lock by turning the steering wheel
The maximum rotation range starting from the center position of the steering wheel: approx. 2 steering wheel rotations
The following attachment parts have been modified:
-
Jacket tube with attachment parts (extended by 7 mm) and a second circlip
-
Steering wheel
-
Cable harness
-
Additional horn relay
-
Turn signal indicator switch and Tempomat lever
-
Airbag sensor (refer to Airbags and Seatbelts)
-
Steering angle sensor
Retrofitting in vehicles with wiper contacts is not possible
The steering angle sensor for ADS is clipped into the back of the contact spiral
At the same time it has bean converted from magnetic to optical operation
