(LCD) with video capability for displaying information such as operating menus and map data for navigation. It is operated by means of preset function
keys and 2 rotary switches as well as menu-assisted on the display. Some functions can also be activated with the aid of the push-buttons on the
multifunction steering wheel (MFL). Here one should note that all button actuations on the multifunction steering wheel are initially processed by the
instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) combines the incoming button actuations with the current menu setting on the left multifunction
display (A1p13) and, if necessary it sends an appropriate Controller Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) message to the COMAND operating,
display and controller unit (A40/3).

COMAND data bus system

The digital components in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) are interlinked through a data bus system. The databus system is
used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components. The individual component operate with
various data formats and they have different request in terms of transmission rate and reliability. Therefore, the following different data bus systems are
installed:

Digital data bus (D2B)
Data is exchanged via D2B between the various D2B components. In doing so both control data and audio signals are transmitted.

Controller area network bus class B (interior compartment) (CAN B)
The CAN-B is used for data exchange with the instrument cluster (A1). This is how the instrument cluster (A1) receives the audio, telephone and
navigation data and the time via this data bus from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) for the left multifunction display
(A1p13).

Component Identification

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3) can be used to operate the following systems centrally:

Integrated digital versatile disk (DVD) drive for playing navigation or audio CDs, video DVDs and MP3s

Navigation system with dynamic destination-oriented navigation system
