Switch on characteristics

Activating the navigation
When the driver's door is opened, the passenger compartment CAN bus automatically activates the navigation system. This process lasts approx. 2
seconds and can be accompanied by faintly audible noises from the CD-ROM drive integrated in the navigation processor. The display of the COMAND
operating, display and control module (A40/3) remains switched off. If as a consequence no change is registered in the ignition and starter switch (e. g.
circuit 15C or 15R, ON), the navigation system remains active for a further 30 minutes.

Activating the overall system

When the ignition/starter switch is turned to approx. 20° position (circuit 15C ON) all other subsystems are activated in position 1 (circuit 15R ON) the
display is switched on, provided that the COMAND system was switched on before the ignition key was removed the last time. COMAND is now
operational. The system active before before the last switch off (e. g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu displayed. If COMAND
was switched off for longer than 30 min, then a warning menu appears with general information on how to use the system.

Pressing "ON" button

COMAND can be switched on by pressing the "ON" button even when the transmitter key is removed. All COMAND functions are then available for 30
min. After 30 min COMAND is automatically switched off.
When the system is switched off after 30 min, it can be switched back on again by pressing the "ON" button again. The 30 min cycle starts up again from
the beginning.

Switch-off characteristics

COMAND is switched off by removing the ignition key (circuit 15C OFF). After this the navigation system goes into a 30 minute run- out time ("standby
mode"). During this time, all important location finding parameters remain stored.

As of 1.7.02 the position map is switched on again after the final act of route guidance (destination reached). COMAND switches off completely after a
shut-off delay of 1 minute.

Moreover the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3) is always in the "stand-by mode" when the passenger compartment CAN bus is
active.

Pressing the "Display" button, only switches over the display between Day, Night and Off modes.

Switch-off characteristics when voltage is too low

The COMAND central processor continuously monitors the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value the system will act as follows:

Battery voltage 9.5 to 11.5 V (battery warning range) If the battery voltage drops to below 11.5 V, a message appears on the display requesting the
driver to start the engine.
If the engine is not started, another warning appears after 3 minutes that 10 seconds is left to start the engine before the system switches off.
Starting the engine in this case prevents the system from switching off automatically. If the system has switched off and the voltage again rises to
above 11.5 V, the COMAND system does not switch back on automatically.
If a system has been shut down it can be switched back on again manually. The warning procedure is accomplished anew each time as long as the
problem is not eliminated.

Battery voltage below 9.5 Volts (undervoltage) COMAND is automatically put into a predefined standby condition, in which only the battery
voltage continues to be monitored.
Moreover, the current operating state is saved. COMAND cannot be operated in this state, nor is it accessible via the Star diagnosis tool. No more
communication is accomplished with external components.
