Occupation of the front passenger seat is registered by the Weight Sensing System (WSS) control unit (N110), which evaluates the following sensors for
this purpose:

Pressure sensor (B48/4)

^

Belt tension sensor (B48/3)

A differentiation is made between the following states:

^

Seat NOT ASSIGNED

^

Seat occupied (not child seat)

^

Child seat detected

Function

The weight applied (adult or child seat) to the front passenger seat is transmitted by a pressure sensor to a sensor mat filled with gel. The belt tension
sensor measures the force introduced by the belt, to be able to perform any required corrections (low weight, child seat recognition).

These two measured values enable a weight category to be calculated for the applied weight (adult or child seat) by the Weight Sensing System (WSS)
control unit (N110) and sent over the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

Depending on the weight category:

^

the airbag, sidebag and emergency tensioning retractor unit are switched off (e.g. seat not occupied)

^

only the airbag unit is switched off (e.g. for a detected child seat and a belt latch inserted into the seat belt buckle)

^

the 1st stage or both stages of the airbag unit are triggered

The CAN-B signal is also sent to the instrument cluster (A1). A corresponding message is displayed by the left multifunction display (A1p13) and the
right multifunction display (A1p15).

If a front passenger seat is recognized to be occupied, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (E16) is switched off.

If the seat is recognized as not occupied, the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp is switched on.
