Seat occupied recognition sensor

If the front passenger seat is occupied by a person, the pressure load of the seat area increases. This induces a change in the resistance of the pressure
sensing resistors in the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48).
If the pressure on the seat surface exceeds a defined value, then the evaluation electronics detect that the front passenger seat is occupied with a person
and transmits a signal over the data line to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7). The seat occupancy status is recaptured at intervals of approx. 0.7 s.
After the load on the front passenger seat has been removed, the occupied signal is retained for approximately 2 min. This protects against any
immediate switching-off of all safety devices when the pressure on the front passenger seat is temporarily removed.

Automatic child seat recognition

Automatic child seat recognition functionality is only given when a DaimlerChrysler approved and coded child seat is used.
This child seat must be equipped with two transponders (resonators) which are located in its base on the left and right. If a child seat is positioned on the
seat, the signals sent by the evaluation electronics over the transmitting antennas in the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor
(B48) are changed by the resonators in the child seat.

These signals are received by each of the receiving antennas in the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) and forwarded
to the evaluation electronics. The evaluation electronics evaluate the signals and notify the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) about the instantaneous
status (e.g. child seat present or not, child seat wrongly positioned).

By means of evaluation of both signals it is also possible to detect the alignment of the child seat (in or opposing the direction of travel).

If a child seat is incorrectly positioned, the instrument cluster (A1) displays the message "PUT CHILD SEAT IN CORRECT POSITION".
