Camshaft: Procedures
Set Basic Position Of Camshafts
Shown On Engine With Camshaft Adjustment
Removal
1
Check basic position of the camshaft
2
Remove cover at the front top of the cylinder head
3
Set piston of cylinder 1 to 30 degrees after TDC
NOTE: At 30 degrees after TDC of cylinder 1 the camshafts can be rotated without the valves striking the piston crown.
4
Remove chain tensioner (14)
5
Remove exhaust camshaft sprocket (78)
6
Lift timing chain (73) off inlet camshaft sprocket (75)
7
Rotate camshafts into basic position, lock in position
NOTE: Lock camshafts in position by inserting positioning pins (01) through the holes in the camshaft bearing caps 1 and 6 into the holes in the
camshaft flanges.
8
Turn back piston of cylinder 1 to 20 degrees after TDC
CAUTION: Pull timing chain up tight when doing this.
Installation
9
Fit timing chain (73) onto inlet camshaft sprocket (75)
NOTE: Engine with camshaft adjustment: The stops around the circumference on the inlet camshaft sprocket (75) must be in "retarded" position
(position of stops in the recesses of the flange shaft) (arrow).
10
Install exhaust camshaft sprocket (78) with timing chain (73) fitted
CAUTION: Replace bolts of camshaft sprocket, use only once.
11
Install chain tensioner (14)
CAUTION: If the complete chain tensioner is slackened, it must be removed, disassembled and re-assembled, as described.
12
Remove positioning pins (01)
13
Check basic position of the camshaft
-
To do this, crank engine twice in direction of rotation.
