Malfunctions in the Central Locking System and the Antitheft Alarm (ATA)

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of the Central Locking System or the Antitheft Alarm System (ATA) malfunctioning,
moisture may be penetrating the PSE pump plug causing corrosion.

Water leaking into the trunk may migrate along the electric or pneumatic lines into the PSE pump. This may result in the following:

^

Water leaks into the pump for the pneumatic control unit (PSE)

^

Corrosion of the plug

^

Malfunction in the Central Locking System

^

Malfunction in the Antitheft Alarm System

To resolve, perform the following.

1.

Precisely locate leaks in the trunk by performing a water penetration test.

a)

Leaks at the rear seal of the Vario roof: Water penetrates from under the seal and over the metal fold into the trunk, then drips onto the trim
and runs along the longitudinal member and the cables into the PSE pumps connector. The seal has an elastic sealant in the area of the leak
(except for over the metal fold). This might not be sufficient in isolated cases. Possible causes:

1)

Seal is too small

2)

Metal fold is too small

3)

Metal fold is wavy (the seal cannot compensate for the waves)

b)

Leaks at the water drain hose on the rear fender: The water runs between the seal and the body cutout because there is not enough clearance
for the seal as the vehicle was being manufactured.

Possible causes:

1)

The shell of the vehicle is not within specified dimensions

2)

The assembly process is faulty; the seal does not snap in

3)

Cutout is not within specified dimensions

4)

Seal is not within specified dimensions (groove is too big)

5)

The fit of the cutout to the seal is too big

c)

Leaks between Vario roof rear lower seal and trunk seal (on quarter panel): Both are "crossed over" each other. Water penetrates between
both of the seals and drips into the trunk. 

Possible causes:

1)

The shell of the vehicle is not within the specified dimensions in this area (especially the metal fold for the trunk seal). The seal "tips"
to the side after the trunk lid is closed and therefore does not seal properly.
