Brake Caliper: Service and Repair
Overhaul

Procedure

1. Remove brake pads on fixed caliper.
2. Remove and install rear axle brake caliper.
3. On fixed caliper with heat shields, disconnect shield .
4. Press off dust cap (45).
5. Hold piston (47) securely with resetting device (031) and carefully press out opposing piston with compressed air.

NOTE:  If the piston has completely seized due to rust, replace the caliper.

6. Remove piston seal from the groove in the cylinder bore.
7. Check and clean piston and cylinder bore, replacing if necessary

Refer to Notes On Damage To Piston Or Cylinder Bore on fixed caliper. See:

For test values for rear axle fixed caliper refer to Overhaul Specifications. See: Specifications

8. Assemble in reverse sequence, noting the following.

Coat new piston seal with brake fluid.

Coat cylinder bore with brake fluid.

-

Put dust cap (45) in an inverted position over piston (47) and insert into the cylinder bore together with the piston.

Push in the piston with both hands.
Ensure correct fit!

Check the position of the piston (47) with a standard gauge (019), if necessary, correct with pliers (020)

For dust cap (45) installation, use pliers (026) and suitable plates(027).

-

On fixed caliper with heat shields, replace heat shield.

9. Press out opposite piston and repair second half of fixed caliper.
