Function

Occupation of the front passenger seat is monitored by the Weight Sensing System (WSS) control unit (N110) with the aid of the following sensors:

^

Pressure sensor (B48/4)

^

Belt tension sensor (B48/3)

A distinction is made between the following situations:

^

Seat NOT ASSIGNED

^

Seat occupied (not child seat)

^

Child seat detected

The information about the weight applied (person or child seat) to the front passenger seat is detected via the pressure sensor (B48/4) integrated in a
sensor mat filled with gel.

The belt tension sensor (B48/3) is used to measure the force introduced by the belt, to be able to perform any required corrections (low weight, child seat
recognition).

These two measured values enable a weight category to be calculated for the applied weight (adult or child seat) by the Weight Sensing System (WSS)
control unit (N110) and sent over the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) to the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).

In the event of a crash and depending on the weight classification, the following occurs on the passenger-side:

^

for Class 0 (seat not occupied)
-

the airbag unit is switched off

-

the belt force limiter is switched off

-

the kneebag unit is switched off

-

the sidebag and emergency tensioning retractor unit:
-

is switched on if the belt latch is inserted

-

is switched off if the belt latch is not inserted

^

for Class 1 (low weight, e.g. child seat recognized)
-

the airbag unit is switched off

-

the belt force limiter is switched off

-

the kneebag unit is switched off

-

the sidebag and emergency tensioning retractor unit:
-

is switched on if the belt latch is inserted

-

is switched off if the belt latch is not inserted

^

for Class 2 to 4 (seat occupied, light, medium or heavy person)
-

the first stage or both stages of the airbag unit are triggered

-

the front passenger kneebag unit is triggered

-

the front passenger sidebag unit is triggered

-

the emergency tensioning retractor unit:
-

is switched on if the belt latch is inserted

-

is switched off if the belt latch is not inserted

The CAN-B signal is also sent to the instrument cluster (A1), which then issues a corresponding airbag unit status message.

The upper control panel control unit (N72/1) actuates the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) depending on the
occupation status:

^

If no occupation is detected (Class 0), the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) is switched on.

^

If the Weight Sensing System (WSS) control unit (N110) detects a low weight (e.g. child seat) (Class 1) and additionally an inserted belt latch, the
automatic child seat recognition airbag Off indicator lamp (N72/1e1) is switched on.

^

If the front passenger seat is recognized as occupied (Class 2 to 4), the automatic child seat recognition airbag OFF indicator lamp (N72/1e1) is
switched off.
