Service Recall 473 -- Certain 1983 Capri Vehicles Equipped With 2.3L Turbocharged Engines for Inspection and, Where Necessary,
Modification of the Engine Hoods.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
1983 Capri 2.3L turbocharged vehicles produced from the start of production (June 20, 1983) through August 22, 1983.
DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT AND CORRECTION
Some of these vehicles may not have sufficient clearance between the throttle linkage and the underside of the hood. As a result, the throttle linkage may
contact the hood, potentially damaging the linkage and preventing the throttle from returning to its idle position. Under certain circumstances, this
condition could create the potential for a vehicle crash.
To correct this condition, the hood is to be inspected and, if necessary, modified.

NOTIFICATION OF OWNERS
Corporate computer records do not indicate any "export" sales of involved vehicles. However, there may be owners who have taken the subject vehicles
abroad as personal belongings or some vehicles may have been exported by unauthorized dealers and/or exporters. Thus, this bulletin is provided as
information only in the event that you learn of an involved vehicle in your market. The modification can then be coordinated via a selected dealer in your
area.
DEALERSHIP OBLIGATION
Dealers are obligated to perform this recall service promptly following presentation of the vehicles by the owners. Federal law requires that Ford Motor
Company advise the owner of the procedure to be followed in informing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the defect is not
remedied without charge within a reasonable time after the vehicle is presented for repair. This has been done in the owner letter issued by the Ford Parts
and Service Division.
TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS
1.
Raise the hood and inspect for a large cut-out directly below the air scoop. If the cut-out is present, the vehicle may be released with no further
action. If the hood has no cut-out, it will be necessary to modify it in accordance with the following instructions.
2.
Remove the hood from the vehicle. Care should be taken not to scratch or mar the exterior surface of the hood.
3.
Remove the air scoop and insulator from the hood.
4.
Obtain template, align the template to the hood at the air scoop attaching holes and mark the cut-out outline on the hood.
5.
Use masking tape and mask off the area outside the cut-out line to prevent scratching the painted surface.
6.
Drill cutting tool access hole along the marked cut-out line.
7.
Using a suitable metal cutting tool (saber saw) cut the turbo scoop cut-out hole in the hood. Be sure to cut the hood inner panel beam at the same
time. Use sheet metal cutters to trim any sharp edges of the inner panel beam.
8.
Remove all rough edges and apply matching touch-up paint to all metal exposed as a result of the cut.
9.
Remove the masking tape and install the air scoop on the hood.
Note:
With the air scoop attached to the hood, the structure corresponds to current production hoods, and it is not necessary to have the
inner panel beam under the hood.
10.
Using the template, mark and cut-out the same size opening in the hood insulator. Reinstall the insulator to the underside of the hood.
