Bowl Vent Solenoid - Idles Rough, Stalls, Hard Starting

CALIBRATIONS: 3-21A, 3-21P, 4-21A, 4-21P

Idle/rough/stalls/hard starting/poor fuel economy may be due to a non-functioning bowl vent solenoid. Inspect the front and rear carb bowl vent hoses for
kinks, and shorten as required to allow approximately one inch of engagement over the carb vent tube when routed in a non-kinked manner. It may be
necessary to rotate hose when installing to eliminate any residual kinking.

Verify function of the front and rear bowl vent solenoid valves as follows:

With ignition key off, disconnect the bowl vent hoses at the carburetor and blow into them. There should be no restriction.

2.

Turn the key to the "on" position and again blow into the vent hoses. The bowl vent vacuum system should be completely blocked.

If one or both valves do not function properly during the above test, verify that voltage to the valves is present when the key is on. If the voltage is
present, replace the nonfunctioning valves. If no voltage is present, service the electrical system as required.

NOTE:

The 10 Amp fuse used on 1983 vehicles was of marginal capacity. If it is blown, replace it with a 15 amp fuse as was used on 1984
applications. Refer to the 1984 Car Shop Manual Volume B, page 34-36-6 (fuse number 2, used for warning lamps, throttle solenoid
positioner, etc.).

When proper function of the bowl vent system is attained, reconnect the hoses taking care that no kinks are present.
