Replacement of the Distributor Modulator Valve Switch Assembly and for Other Engine Compartment Inspections and Possible
Modifications.

Certain 1984-model California Mustang and Capri vehicles equipped with the 5.0L high-output engine (calibration 4-21P-R00; engine code
XK-333-AA) and five-speed manual transmission.
Description of Condition and Correction
Ford is voluntarily recalling approximately 4,000 of the involved vehicles to help assure acceptable levels of emission control. Correction will consist of
replacing the existing distributor modulator valve switch assembly with a revised assembly; this component is a vacuum operated switch in the
thermactor system. As an added measure to help assure proper emission system function, some engine compartment inspections are required. Any
concerns identified as a result of the inspections are to be corrected.
Owner and Dealer Information
Notification of Owners
The enclosed list identifies units delivered to your dealership which are involved in this recall. Vehicles affected by this recall and not yet delivered to
the owners must be corrected prior to delivery. The owners of vehicles for whom names and addresses are shown are being notified directly by First
Class Mail. In those instances where an affected vehicle has been sold, but the owner's name and address is not listed, you should contact the owner
immediately and provide him a copy of the attached owner letter. If the owner of an eligible vehicle cannot be contacted or does not make an
appointment to have his vehicle corrected, the Customer Notification and Dealer Claim Form (FCS 1864) must be returned to us with the owner's name
and address indicated so that we can handle further notification. Eligible vehicles, other than those on the list provided, may be brought to your
dealership by their owners for this recall service. Those units are also to be corrected as promptly as possible. If the owner of an eligible vehicle does not
have a Form 1864, a blank form should be completed by you and sent in for reimbursement.
Dealership Obligations
Dealers are obligated to perform the recall service promptly following tender of the vehicles by the owners. It is important that you promptly report to
your FPSD District Office any instance in which an owner will not allow you to complete this recall because of objections to scheduling or for any other
reason.

Technical and Administrative Instructions
Repair
1.
Locate the existing distributor modulator valve switch assembly (part number E3ZE-12A182-CA; color: light green) installed on the rear of the
left (driver side) strut tower.
2.
Disconnect the vacuum and electrical connections. Remove the switch.
3.
Install the revised distributor modulator valve switch assembly (service part number E4ZZ-12A182-A; color: violet).
4.
Reconnect the vacuum and electrical connections.
Inspection
1.
Remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle. Plug the manifold vacuum hose to the air cleaner. Plug the rubber connector for the thermal
vacuum switch (TVS).
2.
Visually inspect the front carburetor bowl vent hose to determine if the hose is kinked. If kinked, remove the hose from the bowl vent tube and cut
one inch from the end. Rotate the hose, if necessary, to eliminate the kink. Reinstall the hose to the bowl vent tube.
