Stumble/stall may be due to low fuel level in the fuel bowl or a sticking accelerator pump.
The first concern involves the 2.8L Ranger/Bronco II 1983-1/2-84 and is described as a tip-in and off idle stumble and is attributed to low fuel level in
the carburetor fuel bowl.
The second concern involves all vehicles with 2150 2V carburetors 83-84 and is described as a high ambient tip-in stumble/stall and is attributed to a
sticking accelerator pump plunger.
To service the first item, perform the fuel level check (specification is .810) using gauge T83L-9550-A. Follow the procedure in Section 24-25-11 of the
1983 Car Shop Manual (Powertrain). Verify curb idle speed when the fuel level check is completed and the engine speed has stabilized.
To service the second item, remove the accelerator pump housing cover as described in Section 24-25-15 of the same manual -- hand ream the plunger
hole to .323 using a "P" drill. Do not use a drill motor.
Follow the drill all the way through while turning to avoid spiraling the I.D. of the hole. Blow out/clean the cover prior to assembly. Reassemble in the
reverse order. Torque the cover screws to 11 in.lbs.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to
the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it
with a clear plastic decal shield.
