This article outlines a procedure to service a clunk or popping noise emanating from the shock struts in the front suspension on turns. The noise occurs as
the vehicle rolls on the suspension when turning a corner. The noise is a single snap, popping or clunk noise which may be felt in the floor and will not
recur until the vehicle is driven straight and then turned again.
Once the noise has been diagnosed as coming from the front shock struts, replace both shock struts using the Shop Manual procedure. Use only shock
struts which have a tan color code on the strut (in addition to any other color codes) and a green color code on the shipping box. This tan/green color
code identifies the stock as being inspected and not having the noise causing condition. This procedure is for servicing a single clunk or popping type of
noise. If a rattle noise is heard, check for loose fasteners and retorque as required.
The tan/green color code will be used for 90 days (ending approximately November 1, 1983). After November 1, 1983, the tan/green color codes will be
deleted since all stock will be at the certified quality level and special color codes will no longer be required.
