Backing Plate: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove brake drum.
3. Remove rear wheel knuckle and rear hub assembly. Refer To Transmission and Drivetrain.
4. Place rear wheel knuckle in a vise.
5. Remove rear hub from rear wheel knuckle. Refer To Transmission and Drivetrain.
6. Remove rear brake shoes and linings, springs and adjuster from rear brake backing plate.
7. Remove four bolts retaining rear brake backing plate to rear wheel knuckle.
8. Remove rear brake backing plate.

INSTALLATION

1. Install rear brake backing plate assembly using new retaining bolts. Tighten to 59-80 Nm (44-59 ft. lbs.).
2. Install rear hub.
3. Install rear brake shoes and linings, springs and adjuster to rear brake backing plate.
4. Install rear wheel knuckle and rear hub assembly.
5. Adjust the rear brake shoes and linings and install brake drum.
6. Bleed wheel cylinder. 

NOTE:  Whenever the rear brake shoes and lining are removed, the parking brake rear cable and conduit tension should be checked.

7. Check parking brake cable adjustment. See: Parking Brake System/Adjustments
8. Install wheels and tires. Lower vehicle and retest brake system.
