Valve: Service Precautions

CAUTION:

Interference Type Engine

This is NOT a free-wheeling engine, if it has jumped time, there will be damage to the valves and pistons (6108) and will require the removal
of the cylinder heads.

Valve/Piston Damage

The camshaft sprockets (6256) should only be disassembled from the camshafts when one of the components is to be replaced. At no time,
when the timing chain(s) are removed and the cylinder heads (6049) are installed, may the crankshaft (6303) and camshafts (6250) be rotated.
Failure to follow these directions will result in valve and/or piston damage.

NOTE:

Valve Stem-to-Valve Guide Clearance Specifications
In the case of valve stem-to-valve guide clearance, the service clearance is intended as an aid to diagnose engine noise only and does not constitute
a failure or indicate need for service. However, when overhauling or reconditioning a cylinder head, the service clearance should be regarded as
having a practical working value and used as an aid when installing the valve guide and/or valve to ensure extended service life.

Pushrod Removal
When compressing valve spring (6513) to remove push rods (6565), make sure piston in individual cylinder is below top dead center (TDC) to
avoid contact between valve and piston.

Valve Train Reassembly
To replace a push rod, rocker arm or hydraulic valve tappet (6500), it will be necessary to loosen the rocker arm seat retaining bolt and rotate
rocker arm (6564) to the side. After replacement the engine should not be cranked or rotated until valve tappets have an opportunity to leak down
to their normal operating position. The leak-down rate can be accelerated by using a valve tappet bleed-down wrench on rocker arm and applying
pressure in a direction to collapse valve tappet.
