ISSUE:
A "squeaking" or "rubbing" noise in the steering column during acceleration or braking may be caused by the steering shaft rubbing on the shaft seal.
ACTION:
Lubricate the shaft and seal assembly. Refer the the following procedure for service details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
SEE FIGURE 1 BEFORE PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.
1.
Lock steering column in straight ahead position.
2.
Remove plastic stone shield, refer to Figure 1.
3.
Remove lower steering column shaft from vehicle, refer to (Part No. 3C662) in Figure 1.
4.
Pull back rubber seal cap located on the black tube, refer to Figure 1.

Using Ford Multipurpose Grease spray, insert spray nozzle extension between gold shaft and black tube and apply grease.
