Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Remove axle shaft assembly.
2. Disconnect brake cable from lever.
3. Remove brake shoe retaining springs and pins.
4. Set adjuster assembly to shortest length.
5. Slightly pull shoe assemblies away from backing plate and spread enough to remove adjuster assembly.
6. Remove upper return (adjuster) spring.
7. Lift shoe assemblies over support and remove shoes and actuating lever as an assembly.

CAUTION:  Ensure lever does not damage boot or pull boot out of position.

8.  Disassemble shoes, lever and springs.

Installation

1. Install lower return springs and actuating lever to brake shoe assemblies.

2. Ensure boot is properly positioned in backing plate and install shoe assemblies by first inserting lever through boot lowering shoes into position.
3. Install upper return (adjuster) spring.
4. Install adjuster assembly.
5. Install brake shoe retaining springs and pins.
6. Connect brake cable to lever.
7. Install axle shaft assembly.
