Burned or broken pistons can be the result of detonation caused by operating the engine with low coolant.
To avoid repeat services in these cases, it is important to check the entire cooling system for any existing cooling concerns before returning the vehicle to
service.
While the engine is disassembled for service:
1.
Inspect the cylinder head for cracks and the head gasket surface of the cylinder block for metal deformity or damage due to engine overheating.
2.
Check the gasket surface of the cylinder head for warpage. The procedure using a straight edge is outlined in Section 21-25-18 of the 1983 Car
Shop Manual. Do not plane or grind more than 0.254 mm (.010") if found warped.
After the engine has been reassembled, pressurize the system and:

Check for coolant leaks at all hose connections.
4.
Check for coolant leaks at the radiator core, heater core, heater cross-over tube, water pump, thermostat housing, etc.
5.
Verify that the electric cooling fan is operating properly and initial timing is set at specification.
Service as required.
