Distributor/Rotor - Misfire at Idle

MISSES, LOW IDLE SPEEDS (1.6L) - ALL CALIBRATIONS

FORD 1982 ESCORT, EXP WITH ATX

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1982 LYNX, LN7 WITH ATX

This article revises TSB Article 82-21-16. To service concerns of misfire at idle with electrical equipment in use and power steering against the stops,
replace the distributor rotor before installing a new distributor.

1.

Verify customer concern noting engine speeds and load conditions.

2.

Reset engine curb idle speed to 825 RPM and the vacuum operated throttle modulator (throttle kicker) to 1575 RPM.

3.

Determine if the above adjustments have corrected this concern. If not, continue with Step #4.

4.

To confirm that the ignition system is responsible for the concern, repeat Step #1 while monitoring engine RPM with a tachometer. If an
instantaneous change in RPM upward for Dura-Spark II, downward for TFI, is detected, (misfires) replace the distributor rotor.

5.

Using rotor E3ZE-12200-BA replace the distributor rotor. No grease is required on the multi-point rotor.

6.

Determine if the above replacement has corrected the concern. If not, continue to Step #7.

7.

Repeat Step #4. If concern is still present, replace the distributor.

8.

Using a distributor E2EZ-12127-P (TFI) or E2EZ- 12127-R (Dura-Spark II), replace current distributor and set initial timing to 12~ BTDC. Verify
and/or readjust curb idle and other rated speeds to specifications called out on the Emission Decal.

9.

Verify that original concern has been taken care of to customer satisfaction.

Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to
the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it
with a clear plastic decal shield.
