Vehicles Involved
All 1982-model year high-altitude Escort/Lynx and EXP/LN7 vehicles equipped with 1.6L engines.
Description of Condition and Correction
Some of the vehicles described above were built with an improperly adjusted altitude compensator. Vehicles with an improperly adjusted compensator
may experience a deterioration in driveability and/or fuel economy levels in addition to exhibiting average emissions performance in excess of applicable
high altitude standards.
Ford is recalling these vehicles to correct this condition. Correction will consist of adjusting the altitude compensator.
Notification of Owners
The enclosed list identifies units delivered to your dealership which are involved in this recall. Vehicles affected by this recall and not yet delivered to
the owners must be corrected prior to delivery. The owners of vehicles for whom names an addresses are shown are being notified directly by First Class
Mail. In those instances where a suspect vehicle has been sold, but the owner's name and address is not listed, please contact the owner immediately and
provide him a copy of the attached owner letter. If the owner of an eligible vehicle cannot be contacted or does not make an appointment to have his
vehicle corrected, the Customer Notification and Dealer Claim Form (FCS 1864) must be returned to us with the owner's name and address indicated so
that we can handle further notification.
Eligible vehicles, other than those on the list provided, may be brought to your dealership by their owners for this recall service. Those units are also to
be inspected and, if necessary, corrected as promptly as possible. If the owner of an eligible vehicle does not have a Form 1864, a blank form should be
completed by you and sent in for reimbursement. To determine if a vehicle is eligible, you may wish to utilize the "CARES" System.

Dealers are obligated to perform the recall services promptly following tender of the vehicles by the owners. It is important that you promptly report to
your FPSD District Office any instance in which an owner will not allow you to complete this recall because of objections to scheduling or for any other
reason.
Technical and Administrative Instructions
Note:
These instructions supersede those previously provided in the referenced Technical Service Bulletin.
Repair
1.
Open the hood and locate the altitude compensator which is attached to the passenger side of the engine compartment dash panel.
2.
Carefully disconnect the multiple connector from the compensator. Avoid side loading.
3.
Remove the compensator from the vehicle. Retain the two attaching screws. Heat the 5/32-inch brass Allen adjusting screw with a soldering iron
until the adhesive bond is broken. Holding the compensator with the adjusting screw facing you, turn the screw counterclockwise three times.

The action of the compensator is such that the three ports do not always open simultaneously. It is necessary, therefore, to adjust the compensator
until the last port begins to open before the final adjustment is made. Using a hand vacuum pump, apply vacuum individually to each of the three
ports. Holding the compensator with the adjusting screw facing you, turn the screw clockwise until the last port begins to leak vacuum. With all
three ports open, and based on your altitude, further turn the adjusting screw clockwise as shown in the following chart:
