The above concerns may be serviced by cleaning the fuel tank, shortening the fuel tank sender pick-up tube, and replacing the in-tank filter with a larger
filter.
1.
Remove fuel tank per 1983 Escort/Lynx Shop Manual Powertrain Volume E, Section 24-50. Discard fuel and clean fuel tank.
2.
Remove fuel sender per 1983 Escort/Lynx Shop Manual Volume C, Section 33-20.
3.
Remove filter from pick-up tube of fuel sender.
4.
Cut 1.5 inches (38.1 mm) from lower end of pick-up tube and deburr end of tube.
5.
Install new fuel tank sender filter (-9A011-) on tube end, insuring that filter has been seated fully.
6.
Check that sufficient clearance exists between fuel filter and sender float for proper travel. If interference occurs, bend float arm slightly.
7.
Install fuel sender using new gasket (-9276-) into tank and install tank into vehicle.
8.
Install fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel.
9.
Remove the in-line filter assembly from the engine and discard per 1983 Escort/Lynx Shop Manual. Powertrain Volume E, Section 24-51.
10.
Install new in-line fuel filter (-9155-) on engine per 1983 Escort/Lynx Shop Manual - Powertrain Volume E, Section 24-51.
11.
Start engine and check for leaks at in-line filter connection.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to
the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it
with a clear plastic decal shield.
