Power steering gear rack and pinion leaks on TRW steering gears on Escort/Lynx/EXP/LN7 and Tempo/Topaz can usually be serviced by using the new
design seals per TSB 83-14-5 and TSB 83-22. Shininess in the lower pinion bore is normal and does not indicate bore wear, which is usually identified
by a customer concern of reduced steering assist during cold operation. Even a condition of reduced steering assist (if caused by leakage past the lower
pinion seal) can usually be serviced with the new design seal.
Lower pinion seals can be installed in the car by using the new simplified procedure outlined in TSB 83-12-4.
