This article is being re-published to change the part number suffix of the seal kits from B to A.
New lower pinion seals are now available to service leakage concerns at the lower pinion seal. If leakage is noted in the rack boots, particularly in warm
climates, the lower pinion seal should be replaced with the revised seal.

A new power steering gear pinion seal ("B" in Figure 4) is now available for all past model service of these vehicles. This new seal is made of a high
temperature material with a pressure lip garter spring. It is black in color and will service all gears through model number SPR-BR. Also, beginning with
gear models SPR-BW, BX, and BY, seal "C" in Figure 4 will be incorporated in production gears. This seal requires a deeper housing bore and will not
fit in SPR-BR or previous gear housings. This new production seal is brown in color.
Concurrent with the availability of these two new seals, all dealers have been shipped a new pinion seal installer tool, number T84P-3504-F. It is
mandatory to use this new tool when installing either new seal, "B" or "C". The previous tool, T81P-3504-F, should not be used, as it will damage the
new seals, and the new garter spring seals will be the only ones available in the future. Future service kits will contain both seals "B" and "C" for current
and past model coverage.
If it is determined that the leak is at the lower pinion seal, use the new "on the car" procedure for replacing the seal as outlined in TSB 83-12-4.
