2-3 SHIFT CONCERNS

If the procedure outlined in TSB 82-2-14, dated January 29, 1982, does not completely resolve concerns of 2-3 and 3-2 engine cut-loose, use the
following procedure.

The following is a checklist for a step-by-step inspection/verification of those items affecting the 2-3 shift function.

NOTE:

This checklist is for all tapered roller bearing models and incorporates the latest design changes into the earlier built transaxle models.

All required service procedures are in Volume E, Section 17-25, of the model year Car Shop Manual.

Preliminary Checks

Rework and Inspection of the Main Control (Valve Body)

1.

1981 and 1982 transaxles built prior to 1/18/82, verify that the service as shown in TSB 82-2-14, dated January 29, 1982, has been completed.
This TSB instructed the technician to either remove the number 2 check ball from the valve body or drill out the separator plate.

2.

With the transaxle removed, follow the disassembly and assembly procedures as outlined in Volume "E", Section 17-25 of the Car Shop Manuals.

Install kit, E3FZ-7F424-A.

Check all seal grooves and surfaces for damage or wear. Replace any mating component part if wear is evident.

NOTE:

The instruction sheet included with the kit gives installation procedures and inspections for those components affecting the 2-3 shift
function. It includes the required seals for the direct clutch, pump support, intermediate clutch and servo. Also included will be a 1-2 shift
valve kit (7F417) as referenced in TSB 83-7-6.

When building up sub-assemblies, each component should be lubricated with clean transmission fluid. Seals should be coated with petroleum jelly or
specified transmission fluid prior to assembly.

Intermediate clutch assembly

Thrust bearing #10

Direct and one-way clutch

NOTE:

It would be a good idea to check clutch operation prior to installing into the transaxle. The clutch operation check is performed as follows:

Apply air pressure to intermediate clutch feed hole. Piston should move with a clunk that can be heard.

Apply air pressure to direct clutch feed orifice. Piston should move with a clunk that can be heard.
