Thermostat: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The thermostat ensures rapid engine warm-up by restricting coolant flow at lower operation temperatures. It also assists in keeping the engine
operation temperature within predetermined limits.
OPERATION
With the engine coolant temperature less than 190°F spring pressure forces the thermostat shut. This blocks coolant flow to the radiator, forcing
the coolant to recirculate through the block and heater core. As the coolant temperature rises to 190°F a wax pellet inside of the thermostat begins
to melt and expand forcing the thermostat to open. This allows coolant to begin circulating through the radiator, maintaining a minimum operating
temperature of 190°F.
