Steering Wheel: Service and Repair
MODELS LESS PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove steering hub cover assembly, then the steering wheel attaching nut. Discard nut.
3.
Remove steering wheel from steering shaft using tool T67L3600A. Do not use a knock-off type steering wheel puller or strike end of steering
column with a hammer since damage to steering column bearings will result.
4.
Reverse procedure to install. Install new wheel retaining nut, then torque to 30---40 ft. lbs. On non-tilt models, install steering wheel cover, then
insert attaching bolts and torque to 13---20 inch lbs.
MODELS W/PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM
Carefully follow the following procedure to avoid serious injury and/or vehicle damage. Removal
1.
Park vehicle with wheels in straight ahead position, then turn ignition switch to ``Lock'' position and rotate steering wheel approximately 16°
counterclockwise until locked into position.
2.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Remove steering wheel as follows:
a. Working from rear of steering wheel, remove four nuts attaching air bag module to steering wheel. Place an alignment mark on the steering
wheel and shaft.
b. Lift air bag module from wheel and disconnect air bag module to slip ring clock spring electrical connector.
c. Remove and discard steering wheel attaching nut.
d. Using tool T67L-3600-A or equivalent only, remove steering wheel from upper shaft. Do not use a knock-off type steering wheel puller or
strike end of steering column upper shaft with a hammer.
Installation
1.
Position steering wheel on end of steering wheel shaft, aligning marks made during removal.
2.
Install a new steering wheel attaching nut. Torque nut to 30---40 ft. lbs.
3.
Connect air bag module wire to slip ring electrical connector and place module onto steering wheel. Install four attaching nuts. Torque nuts to
35---53 inch lbs.
4.
Connect battery ground cable.
