Turbocharger: Service and Repair

Removal
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove radiator shield from support, then loosen compressor outlet hose clamp at throttle housing.
3.
Disconnect compressor outlet hose, then position aside.
4.
Remove compressor intake hose.
5.
Remove alternator, then the alternator mounting bracket.
6.
Disconnect electrical connector at EGO sensor.
7.
Raise and support vehicle.
8.
Disconnect oil return line at bottom of turbocharger center housing.
9.
Lower vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe to turbocharger attaching nuts.
10.
Remove exhaust shield to water outlet bracket attaching bolt.
11.
Remove exhaust manifold to cylinder head attaching bolts, then slide turbocharger and exhaust manifold away from cylinder head. Remove
exhaust shield.
12.
Remove turbocharger and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
13.
Remove turbocharger to exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then separate assemblies.
Installation
1.
Install turbocharger to exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then torque to 16---19 ft. lbs.
2.
Install exhaust manifold and turbocharger assembly onto cylinder head studs with new gasket.
3.
Position exhaust shield onto exhaust manifold, then the exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head.
4.
Install exhaust manifold attaching nuts, then torque nuts to 16---19 ft. lbs.
5.
Install exhaust shield to water outlet housing bracket attaching bolt, then torque bolt to 6---8 ft. lbs.
6.
Connect oil inlet line to turbocharger center housing, then torque fitting to 6---8.8 ft. lbs.
7.
Align exhaust pipe with turbine outlet studs, then install attaching nuts and torque to 6---8.8 ft. lbs.
8.
Raise and support vehicle, then position oil return line onto bottom of center housing. Install attaching bolts, then torque to 6---8 ft. lbs. Lower
vehicle.
9.
Connect EGO sensor electrical connector.
10.
Install alternator bracket, then the alternator and adjust belt tension.
11.
Connect compressor inlet and outlet hoses, then tighten hose clamps.
12.
Connect battery ground cable. After installation of turbocharger assembly, start and idle engine for approximately 60 seconds, then check
for oil leakage and leaks in exhaust and intake systems.
