Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
MANUAL STEERING
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then turn ignition switch to ``On'' position.
2.
Remove access panel from dash below steering column.
3.
Remove intermediate shaft bolts at gear input shaft and at steering column shaft.
4.
Using a wide blade screwdriver, spread slots enough to loosen intermediate shaft at both ends.
5.
Turn steering wheel fully left to allow clearance for tie rod removal.
6.
Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles using tool 3290C and adapter T81P3504W. Turn right wheel to full left position.
7.
Remove left tie rod end from tie rod, then on vehicles equipped with automatic transmission disconnect speedometer cable at transmission.
8.
Disconnect secondary air tube at check valve, then exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold.
9.
Remove exhaust hanger bracket from below steering gear. Wire exhaust system aside.
10.
Remove gear mounting brackets and insulators, then separate gear from intermediate shaft while simultaneously pulling upward on shaft from
inside vehicle. Right and lefthand brackets and insulators are not interchangeable.
11.
Rotate gear forward and downward to clear input shaft.
12.
Ensure input shaft is in full left turn position, then remove gear through right side apron opening until left tie rod clears shift linkage.
13.
Lower left side of gear and remove gear from vehicle.
14.
Reverse procedure to install. Ensure input shaft is at full left turn stop and right wheel assembly is in full left turn position. Use caution not to
damage steering gear bellows.
POWER STEERING
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then turn ignition switch to On position.
2.
Remove access panel from dash below steering column.
3.
Remove four screws from dash panel steering column boot, then slide boot along intermediate shaft.
4.
Remove intermediate shaft bolts at gear input shaft and from steering column shaft.
5.
Using wide blade screwdriver, spread slot wide enough to loosen intermediate shaft at both ends.
6.
Turn steering wheel to full left stop to facilitate gear removal.
7.
On all 1982 vehicles except 1.6 L. engine and manual transmission without air conditioning, remove pressure switch electrical connector, then the
switch.
8.
On 1984---88 vehicles, remove air cleaner.
9.
On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, except Tempo and Topaz models, secure liquid line above dash opening.
10.
Disconnect secondary air tube at check valve, then the exhaust pipes from exhaust manifold. Secure exhaust system to the side.
11.
Remove exhaust hanger brackets from below steering gear and from side apron.
12.
Disconnect pressure and return lines from intermediate connector and drain fluid.
13.
Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles using tool 3290C and adapter T81P3504W. Turn right wheel to full left turn position.
14.
On vehicles equipped with manual transmission, remove left tie rod end from tie rod.
15.
On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
16.
On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect shift cable assembly from transmission.
17.
Except on Tempo and Topaz models, remove screws securing heater water tube to brace below oil pan.
18.
Except on Tempo and Topaz models, remove nut from lower bolt securing engine mounting bracket to transmission housing. Tap bolt out as far as
possible.
19.
Remove gear mounting brackets and insulators.
20.
Remove gear from intermediate shaft by pushing upward on shaft with bar while pulling gear downward.
21.
Rotate gear downward and forward to clear input shaft.
22.
Ensure input shaft is in full left turn position, then move gear through right side apron opening until left tie rod clears opening. Use caution to
avoid damaging bellows.
23.
Lower left side of gear and remove gear from vehicle.
24.
Reverse procedure to install.
