Replacement of the timing belt when the belt tension is released is not necessary. Replace a damaged timing belt as required.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove timing belt cover, Fig. 8. Turn crankshaft until crankshaft pulley keyway is at 12 o'clock and camshaft sprocket keyway is at 6 o'clock
(sprocket pointer at timing mark on cylinder head), Fig. 10.
3.
Install timing belt cover and ensure that timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with TDC mark on front cover. Remove timing belt cover.
4.
Loosen both timing belt tensioner attaching bolts using tool T81P-6254A or equivalent.
5.
Position belt tensioner away from belt as far as possible, then tighten one of the tensioner attaching bolts, Fig. 11.
6.
Remove crankshaft pulley, then the timing belt. Discard timing belt, if damaged.
7.
Install timing belt over sprocket in clockwise direction starting at crankshaft. Ensure belt span between crankshaft and camshaft is kept tight as
belt is installed over remaining sprockets, Fig. 12. Do not alter relationship between camshaft and crankshaft as shown in Fig. 10.
8.
Loosen belt tensioner attaching bolts and allow tensioner to locate against belt.
9.
Tighten one tensioner attaching bolt using tool T81P-6254A or equivalent.
10.
Install crankshaft pulley, drive plate and pulley attaching bolt.
11.
Hold crankshaft pulley stationary using tool YA-826 or equivalent and torque pulley attaching bolt to 74-90 ft. lbs.
12.
To seat timing belt on sprocket teeth, proceed as follows:
a. Connect battery ground cable.
b. Crank engine for approximately 30 seconds.
c. Disconnect battery ground cable.
d. Turn crankshaft to align timing pointer on camshaft sprocket with timing mark on cylinder head.
e. Position timing belt cover on engine and confirm timing mark on crankshaft aligns with TDC pointer on the cover. If timing marks do not
align, remove timing belt, align timing marks, Fig. 10, and repeat steps 7 through 13.
13.
Loosen belt tensioner attaching bolt tightened in step 9.
14.
Secure crankshaft so it cannot rotate, then using tool No. D81P-6256 or equivalent and a torque wrench, turn camshaft sprocket counterclockwise.
