Cross-Member: Service and Repair
Front
REMOVAL
Steering must be set straight ahead during following procedure to ensure that correct alignment is maintained.
1.
Install engine support fixture, then raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove pivot bolts attaching control arms to crossmember.
3.
Remove control arm end from crossmember by gripping bottom of tire and pulling outward.
4.
Remove pinch bolt at steering column to steering gear coupling.
5.
Remove steering gear to crossmember attaching bolts and washers.
6.
Disengage steering gear coupling from steering column and pull steering gear forward away from crossmember, being careful not to stretch or
bend power steering gear hoses or tubes.
7.
Support steering gear by tying it out of way.
8.
Remove engine mounts to crossmember attaching stud nuts.
9.
On Scorpio models, remove brake line clips from crossmember and carefully slide brake lines out from locator slots.
10.
On all models, position jack under crossmember and secure with safety chain.
11.
Remove crossmember to side rail attaching bolts and washers.
12.
Lower crossmember and remove from under vehicle.
INSTALLATION
1.
Raise crossmember into position and install crossmember to side rail attaching bolts and washers.
2.
Torque attaching bolts to 51-66 ft. lbs. and remove jack.
3.
Position steering gear on crossmember and connect coupling to steering column, ensuring that block splines are properly mated.
4.
Install steering gear attaching bolts and washers, snugging bolt to 11 ft. lbs. plus an additional 90°.
5.
Install steering coupling pinch bolt, torquing to 15-22 ft. lbs. on Scorpio models, or 18-22 ft. lbs. on XR4Ti models.
6.
Install engine mount attaching bolts, torquing to 31-42 ft. lbs. on Scorpio models, or 38-47 ft. lbs. on XR4Ti models.
7.
Grip bottom of tire and pull inward until control arm enters crossmember, aligning control arm with bolt holes and install pivot bolt. Use drift
punch to hold control arm in alignment while pivot bolt is installed.
8.
Install pivot bolt and washer, snugging but not tightening bolt.
9.
Lower vehicle.
10.
With weight of vehicle on front tires, torque control arm pivot bolt to 22 ft. lbs. on Scorpio models, or 11 ft. lbs. on XR4Ti models, plus an
additional 90° on all models.
11.
Remove engine support fixture.
