Hydraulic Control Assembly - Antilock Brakes: Service and Repair

It is mandatory that hydraulic pressure be discharged from the system before hydraulic unit removal. The hydraulic accumulator contains 
brake fluid under high pressure.  Turn ignition to off and pump brake pedal a minimum of 20 times until an increase in pedal force is clearly
felt to discharge system pressure.

Removal

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Disconnect electrical connectors from reservoir cap, main valve, pressure switch, valve block, electric pump and ground connector.

3.

Disconnect hydraulic lines from unit valve body one at a time, while immediately plugging each tube opening in valve body to prevent fluid loss.

4.

Remove under-dash trim panel from around brake pedal, and brake pedal push rod clip.

5.

Remove four hydraulic unit mounting nuts.  An assistant should support hydraulic unit when removing mounting nuts.

6.

Lift hydraulic actuation unit from vehicle and drain reservoir.  Do not lift unit by its hoses, reservoir or push rod.

7.

Remove and discard sealing gasket from hydraulic unit and dash panel.

Installation

1.

Install a new seal gasket to hydraulic unit and dash panel, and install spherical ball onto push rod.

2.

Carefully install hydraulic unit into vehicle.  Ensure push rod enters brake pedal, do not force push rod from its natural position.

3.

Support hydraulic unit while an assistant tightens unit with four mounting nuts to 30-37 lb-ft.

4.

Install brake pedal push rod clip.

5.

Remove plugs from valve body tube openings one at a time, and install hydraulic lines to unit.

6.

Connect electrical connectors to reservoir cap, main valve, pressure switch, valve block electric pump and ground connector.  Then fill reservoir
with new brake fluid, and perform front brake bleeding procedures.

7.

Connect battery ground cable, turn ignition to Run and check electric pump operation.  Do not allow electric pump to operate for more than
two minutes.

8.

Perform rear brake bleeding procedures.  Install under-dash trim panel around brake pedal and check brake system for leaks and operation.
