Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal/Installation
This model is equipped with a ZF power steering gear.
Removal
1.
Turn steering wheel to straight-ahead position.
2.
Raise and support vehicle.
3.
Remove lower pinch bolt securing flex coupling to steering gear pinion shaft.
4.
Remove nuts and cotter pins securing tie rod ends to spindle carriers.
5.
Separate tie rod ends from spindle carriers.
6.
Position drain pan and disconnect power steering hoses from steering gear by removing routing clamp and the bolt securing pump line plate
assembly to gear housing and pulling assembly free. Plug housing port to prevent contamination.
7.
Remove steering gear attaching bolts and the steering gear.
Installation
1.
Position steering gear on engine front crossmember. Torque two attaching bolts to 11 ft. lbs., then an additional 90°.
2.
Remove plugs from fluid lines and gear housing ports.
3.
Install new O-rings on pressure and return lines, then connect lines to gear.
4.
Install routing clamp screw and clamp plate bolt. Torque bolt to .6-.9 ft. lbs.
5.
Connect tie rod ends to spindle carriers. Torque attaching nuts to 19-22 ft. lbs., then install cotter pins.
6.
Install steering column coupling shaft onto pinion shaft. Install pinch bolt and torque to 19-22 ft. lbs. Ensure block splines on coupling and
pinion shaft are properly aligned.
