Steering Gear: Adjustments
The rack yoke preload adjustment is not a service adjustment. It is only to be done as part of a complete overhaul of the steering gear to
maintain accurate steering gear operation.
1.
Position rack in the straight-ahead position and remove yoke plug using tool T85M-3504-C or equivalent.
2.
Apply Loctite Activator N(764) or equivalent, on yoke plug threads and install into steering gear.
3.
Using tool T85M-3504-C or equivalent and a suitable torque wrench, torque plug to 30-35 inch lbs.
4.
Install pinion shaft seal replacer/torque adapter tool onto pinion shaft. Position the tool so lock screws engage pinion shaft splines. Using the tool,
turn pinion in one direction and then in the opposite direction until rack has moved twice from stop-to-stop.
5.
Return rack to straight-ahead position.
6.
Check yoke plug torque. If necessary, torque again to 30-35 inch lbs.
7.
Using tool T85M-3504-8 or equivalent and a suitable torque wrench, check pinion shaft turning effort. Turning effort as indicated by the torque
wrench should be no less than 12 inch lbs. If turning effort reading obtained is less then 12 inch. lbs., repeat step 6. The rack cylinder should be
in the horizontal position when checking pinion torque to prevent rack weight from affecting the reading.
8.
With pinion shaft rotation torque at 12 inch lbs. Back off yoke plug 22-27°.
9.
Check pinion shaft rotation again. Now, it should not exceed 15 inch lbs.
10.
If torque exceeds 15 inch lbs., back off yoke cover a maximum of 5°.
11.
Apply Loctite 290 sealant or equivalent, onto yoke cover threads.
12.
Stake steering gear housing in three places around the yoke plug. Do not use the original staking positions.
