ISSUE:
A steering wheel that momentarily "snatches or jerks" slightly either right or left when the brakes are suddenly applied ("jabbed") may be
caused by air trapped in the front brake calipers.
ACTION:
To correct this, back bleed the brake calipers to remove any entrapped air. Refer to the following procedure for detailed service
information.
1.
Road test vehicle at a low speed and "jab" the brake pedal to check for steering wheel movement. If movement is present proceed to Step 2.
2.
Inspect the front suspension and steering components for wear, damage or looseness. Service as required.
3.
Remove the front wheels.
4.
Remove the right caliper from the caliper anchor plate and remove both brake pads.
NOTE:
DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE HOSE FROM THE CALIPER.
5.
Back bleed the caliper by slowly pushing on the brake pedal to extend the caliper piston about 1".
NOTE:
DO NOT EXTEND THE PISTON FARTHER THAN 1" OR IT WILL COME OUT OF THE CALIPER.
6.
Using a "C" clamp, push the piston back into the caliper. Hold the caliper so the brake hose is at the top of the caliper.
7.
Repeat Steps 5 and 6 an additional five (5) times to make sure all the air has been removed.
8.
Repeat Steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 on the left brake caliper.
9.
Reinstall the calipers and front wheels.
10.
Test drive the vehicle to make sure the condition has been corrected. If the condition is still present, install new stabilizer bar bushings,
(E8RY-5A486-A) at the control arm. Refer to the Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual, Section 14-05-4 for detailed installation instructions.
