1985 Merkur XR4Ti's equipped with manual transmissions may exhibit a "low-end" engine knock during initial clutch engagement at low rpm. This
knock may be caused from the air conditioning compressor belt being driven off of the crankshaft pulley creating a side load on the engine's front main
bearing.
This condition can be diagnosed by removing the A/C belt and loading the engine at normal (hot) operating temperature by engaging the clutch. If the
knock has been eliminated, refer to the following repair procedure.

Remove the water pump pulley assembly, crankshaft pulley assembly and the A/C drive belt and discard. (See Figure 6).
