CIGAR LIGHTER - BASE SOCKET SHORTS TO GROUND

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1985-1989 XR4Ti.
ISSUE:
The cigar lighter base socket may short to ground and blow the lighter fuse. The production cigar lighter base socket has a melt fuse near the
lighter heating element which could melt from the heat generated by the lighter heating element. The affected Scorpios were bulit before
2/01/89.
ACTION:
Install a new cigar lighter base socket that has a bi-metallic switch instead of a melt fuse. Some cigar lighters are center instrument panel
mounted and others are control panel mounted. The old insert or lighter heating element can still be used in the new base socket. Refer to
the appropriate Shop Manual, Section 35-40 for service details.
