Graphic Display Module - Difficult to See

GRAPHIC DISPLAY MODULE - DUAL INTENSITY OPTIC IMPROVEMENT

MERKUR 1985 XR4Ti

During daylight hours it can be difficult to see the vehicle outline on the 1985 Merkur XR4Ti Auxiliary Warning System display module. To service this
concern, a dual intensity module has been released which is bright for daylight operation, and automatically dims whenever the headlamps or parking
lamps are turned on. This feature was incorporated at Job #1 for the 1986 XR4Ti. Perform the following procedure for retrofitting 1985 vehicles.

NOTE:

The new part (AB level suffix) described in this article supersedes and replaces the old part (AA level suffix). Therefore, technicians should
ensure that the associated wiring modifications specified in this article for 1985 vehicles have been done whenever a module replacement is
required due to part failure.

1.

Remove the clock and graphic display module following the procedures outlined in Group 33 of the 1985 Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual. Discard
the module.

2.

Locate the black and yellow wire at pin number 2 of the display module wiring connector. Cut the wire leaving sufficient length at the connector to
splice on a new wire. Tape the loose end to the harness.

3.

Using solder or a suitable solderless connector, splice one end of a one foot (12 inch) 18 gauge wire to the cut connector wire.

4.

Locate the gray wire with yellow stripe at the clock connector. Cut the wire and splice both ends to the new 12 inch wire (3 wire connection). Use
solder or a suitable solderless connector.

5.

Tape the splices and secure the wire connectors to the new graphic display module and the clock.

6.

Install the module and clock following the Shop Manual procedure.

To check the system for proper operation; with ignition switch on, observe the green vehicle outline, turn on headlights and the outline will dim. The red
telltale lights remain at the same high intensity.
