This article applies to all cars and light trucks built from July 1, 1985 through February 28,1986, with a 40, 60, 65 or 75 amp alternator. Charging system
concerns that are diagnosed as "low or no alternator output" as defined in the Shop Manual, Section 31-01, "Charging System Test with Load" may be
caused by an open stator neutral terminal connection. This condition can be corrected by installing a new stator.

The stator neutral terminal (refer to Figure 4), is the common connection of the three stator windings. The terminal crimp may relax under thermal
cycling and eventually begin to arc until it opens circuits. Once the terminal arcs open, there is no alternator output.
NOTE:
Alternators manufactured after February 10, 1986 have an improved stator terminal connection.
Disassemble the alternator and inspect the stator neutral terminal for signs of overheating and/or arcing. Confirm by performing the "Stator Coil Open
Test" described in Section 31-17 of the Shop Manual. Replace the stator with the appropriate service replacement stator. Do not replace the entire
alternator assembly. Do not attempt to repair the stator connection.
