Clutch Disc: Service and Repair

NOTE:  Do not get grease or oil on clutch disc facing. Even a small trace of grease or oil may cause clutch grabbing or slipping. Handle disc by its
edges and do not touch facings. The clutch assembly is equipped with a self adjuster which automatically adjusts cable length to maintain correct pedal
height and throw out bearing preload.

REMOVAL

1. Remove transmission as described under ``Transmission, Replace.''
2. If old pressure plate is to be reused, scribe alignment marks on pressure plate and flywheel for proper assembly.
3. Remove pressure plate attaching bolts, loosening bolts one turn at a time to release pressure plate spring tension evenly, then remove pressure

plate and clutch disc. 

INSTALLATION

1. When installing new clutch, sand friction surfaces on pressure plate and flywheel using medium-fine emery cloth or equivalent aluminum oxide

paper. Sand lightly until friction surfaces are covered with fine scratch lines that run across the surface.

2. After sanding, remove all traces of grit and oil using shop towel saturated with denatured alcohol.
3. Coat crankshaft pilot bearing with small amount of suitable lubricant.
4. Position clutch disc and pressure plate on flywheel, aligning marks made during disassembly, then install clutch alignment tool T71P-7137-H or

equivalent.

NOTE:  Ensure that clutch disc faces in proper direction. New discs are stamped FLYWHEEL to indicate proper installation direction. When
installed correctly, damper springs will face away from flywheel.

5. Torque pressure plate attaching bolts one turn at a time to 15-19 ft lbs.
6. Remove clutch disc alignment tool, then install transmission.
