Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1.
Ensure that transmission is in neutral and parking brake is fully released.
2.
Raise and support rear of vehicle with rear wheels hanging free.
3.
Remove bolts attaching halfshaft to wheel stub shaft, turning driveshaft as necessary to bring bolts into accessible position.
4.
On Scorpio models, position halfshaft in grooved area of the rear suspension control arm.
5.
On XR4Ti models, hang halfshaft from floor of vehicle.
6.
On all models, remove bolts attaching halfshaft to rear axle stub shaft and remove halfshaft.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Halfshafts are different lengths and must be installed on the correct side of vehicle, with longer shaft being installed on right side of vehicle.
1.
Pack CV joints with suitable lubricant.
2.
On Scorpio models, position halfshaft in grooved area of the rear suspension control arm.
3.
On XR4Ti models, hang halfshaft from floor of vehicle.
4.
On all models, position halfshaft to axle stub shaft and install attaching bolts.
5.
Release halfshaft from vehicle floor and position it to axle stub shaft, installing attaching bolts.
6.
Torque attaching bolts to 28-31 ft. lbs.
