TURNS OR ANY BODY FLEXING - VEHICLES BUILT

LIGHT TRUCK:
1998 EXPLORER, MOUNTAINEER
ISSUE:
A "squeaking/creaking" noise may be heard from the right side of the instrument panel while turning or during any body flexing. This may be caused by
the cowl top panel contacting the right fender inner reinforcement.
ACTION:
Bend the cowl top panel away from the inner fender reinforcement. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Verify the source of the noise is coming from the cowl top panel sheet metal and not the instrument panel.
2.
Remove the right front fender. Refer to the 1998 Explorer/Mountaineer Workshop Manual, Section 501-02, for details.
3.
Locate the right side edge of the cowl top panel rear panel. Refer to Figure 1.
4.
Using a large flat blade, such as a screwdriver, and hammer, bend the cowl top edge downward.
5.
Test drive to verify the repair.
6.
Reinstall fender. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 501-02, for details.
