ISSUE:
A rotational "thump" noise may be heard on some vehicles. This may be caused by the power steering return hose contacting the CV boot clamp on hard
acceleration and/or when turning.
ACTION:
Replace the power steering return hose. The new hose is routed away from the rotation of the CV boot clamps. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
REMOVAL
1.
Apply a small amount of grease to the suspect CV boot clamp. Test drive the vehicle to confirm the "Thump" noise is present by operating the
vehicle under moderate to heavy acceleration and/or low speed full lock turns to the right and left.
2.
Inspect the power steering hose for witness marks left by the grease If grease is present on the hose, continue with this procedure. If no grease is
found, this TSB does not apply and normal diagnostics must be followed.
3.
Disconnect the battery ground cable.
4.
On 2.0L engines, remove one (1) nut and two (2) bolts, then disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump bracket
and the engine lifting bracket.
5.
On 2.5L engines, remove the one (1) bolt and disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the front engine support insulator.
6.
Remove the power steering pump auxiliary reservoir as outlined in the 1995 Contour/Mystique Service Manual.
7.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the front sub-frame. Refer to the 1995 Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Sections 00-02 and 02-01.
8.
Disconnect the power steering return hose union from the power steering pump.
9.
Remove two (2) bolts retaining the power steering return hoses to the front sub-frame and remove the hoses.
CAUTION:
WHENEVER THE POWER STEERING HOSES ANDIOR STEERING GEAR ARE DISCONNECTED, THE POWER STEERING HOSES
AND/OR STEERING GEAR SHOULD BE PLUGGED TO PREVENT SYSTEM CONTAMINATION. IF THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM
BECOMES CONTAMINATED WITH DIRT OR OTHER FOREIGN MATERIAL, POWER STEERING PUMP ANDIOR STEERING GEAR
FAILURE MAY RESULT.
INSTALLATION
1.
Position the power steering return hose (F5RZ-3A713-A) to the front sub-frame and secure with one (1) bolt on the pressure hose at the rear of the
steering gear and one (1) screw on the return hose at the front of the steering gear. Tighten the fasteners to 28 N-m (21 lb-ft).
2.
Connect the power steering return hose union to the steering gear. Tighten the union to 31 N-m (23 lb-ft).
3.
Install the front sub-frame. Refer to the 1995 Contour/Mystique Service Manual, Section 02-01.
