Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
NOTE: Ford does not provide a procedure to service the transmission filter seperately from the transmission overhaul. For location of the filter - refer
to Automatic Transmission/Service and Repair/Disassembly. The filter is referred to near step 40.
FLUID CHANGE
NOTE: Automatic transaxle fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles if the vehicle operates for prolonged periods at idle or below 30° F, is driven
regularly in dusty conditions, or on salted, muddy, or rough road surfaces or if contamination is suspected.
1. Raise and support vehicle, then place a suitable container beneath transaxle drain plug.
2. Remove plug and allow fluid to drain.
NOTE: If an internal transaxle problem is suspected, drain fluid through a suitable paper filter. While a small accumulation of metal or friction
particles may indicate normal wear, an excessive amount warrants further internal transaxle service.
3. Clean drain plug threads and apply a thin coat of Teflon pipe sealant No. D8AZ-19554-A or equivalent. Install drain plug and tighten.
4. Lower vehicle, then add 6 quarts of Mercon ATF or equivalent to transaxle. MERCON(R) automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by
MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
5. Start engine, then move selector lever through all gear ranges. Check fluid level and add as required.
