Steering Gear: Description and Operation

The power steering gear is a conventional rack and pinion type. There are two steering gears used:
^
623 mm rack travel for SVT vehicles fitted with 205/55R16 tires.
^
675 mm rack travel for all other tires with I4.
^
663 mm rack travel for V-6 vehicles.
The steering gear is mounted on the front subframe assembly.
Hydraulic fluid under pressure is supplied to the steering gear by a hydraulic pump. The pump has a remote reservoir which is attached to the strut
tower at the upper right-hand corner of the engine compartment.
