FORD 1986-87 TAURUS
LINCOLN-MERCURY 1986-87 SABLE
ISSUE:
Abnormal front brake wear or a heavy front braking condition may be caused by an improperly adjusted rear height sensor brake
proportioning valve.
ACTION:
Use the following service procedure to check the adjustment of the rear height sensor brake proportioning valve.
1.
Drive vehicle on a hoist or alignment machine so that it is resting on its wheels at curb height.

Measure distance "A" between the operating rod upper nut and the retainer in the valve lever. See Figure 4. The distance for a
nominal setting should be 16.3 +/- .3 mm (.64 +/- .012 inch). If the distance is outside of these settings, the rear height sensor
brake proportioning valve should be adjusted as follows:
To adjust the rear height sensor brake proportioning valve, refer to Figure 4 and the following procedure:
To Decrease Pressure at Rear Brakes
1.
Make sure suspension is at curb height.
2.
Loosen set screw in adjusting sleeve.
3.
Move adjusting sleeve UP - TOWARD VALVE BODY on operating rod 1 mm for each 413 kPa (60 PSI) pressure decrease.
4.
Tighten set screw in adjusting sleeve in desired position.
To Increase Pressure at Rear Brakes
1.
Make sure suspension is at curb height.
2.
Loosen set screw in adjusting sleeve.
