Tilt Steering Column - Stuck in Lowest Position
Article No. 86-16-7
STEERING COLUMN - TILT - UNABLE TO MOVE OUT OF LOWEST DOWNWARD POSITION - VEHICLES BUILT PRIOR TO 7/15/86

Some steering columns could become stuck in the lowest tilt down position. This is caused by the steering column position spring riding under the tilt
position detent locator. To correct this, a redesigned tilt position detent locator and steering column position spring should be installed as follows:
1.
Remove four screws retaining steering column opening lower cover and remove cover.

2.
Remove bolt and steering column position spring. Figure 7
3.
Remove torx head bolt and steering column position detent locator. Figure 7
4.
Install new steering column position detent locator and tighten bolt to 3.4-6.8 N-m (30-60 in.lbs.).
