Axle Shaft: Service Precautions

CAUTION:  To prevent damage never hold the halfshaft assembly by the front wheel driveshaft and joint or front wheel driveshaft joint only.

Care should be exercised during halfshaft removal and installation, and during the various component disassembly and assembly procedures:
-

Do not remove front wheel driveshaft joint by pulling on interconnecting shaft.

The complete front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp should be handled by the interconnecting shaft to avoid pulling apart or potential damage to
the front wheel driveshaft joint.

-

Do not over-angle CV joints beyond their capacity.

-

Make sure that ground surfaces and splines are not damaged.

-

Do not allow front wheel driveshaft joint boot to come into contact with sharp edges or hot engine and exhaust components.

-

Do not drop assembled halfshaft, as the impact will cut the front wheel driveshaft joint boot from the inside without external evidence of damage.

-

Front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp assembly is not to be used as a lever arm to position other front end components. Always support free end
of halfshaft.

-

Make sure inner CV joint grease does not become contaminated. If replaced, fill front wheel driveshaft joint boot with grease.

-

An assembled front wheel driveshaft and joint may be damaged if it is "over-plunged" outward from the joint housing.

-

Never use a hammer to remove or install front wheel driveshaft joint boot clamp.

WHEEL AND TIRE BALANCING, FRONT 

WARNING:  ON-VEHICLE FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE BALANCING WITH FRONT SUSPENSION IN THE FULLY EXTENDED
(REBOUND) POSITION MAY OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CV JOINTS. PROPER ON-VEHICLE BALANCING REQUIRES
THAT THE FRONT WHEEL(S) AND TIRE(S) BE LIFTED OFF THE GROUND BY PLACING A JACK UNDER THE FRONT
SUSPENSION LOWER ARM. 

HOISTING 

Never raise vehicle using the halfshafts as lift points.

TOWING 

Never tow vehicle using the halfshafts as anchor points for tow truck cable or chains.

UNDERCOATING AND RUSTPROOFING 

Extreme care must be taken during undercoating and rustproofing procedures to protect front wheel driveshaft joint boots from coating materials.
Foreign materials on the front wheel driveshaft joint boot convolutions will cause advanced wear.
